Embassy Press Officer’s reply to a media question concerning the anti-Russian statement by MI6 chief Alex Younger
Question: How would you comment on the statement made by MI6 chief Alex Younger, who has named Russia as one of Britain’s “adversaries who regard themselves as being in a state of perpetual confrontation with the UK”?
Answer: We have carefully taken note of the speech by the MI6 chief. In fact, it is Britain that regards itself in a state of perpetual confrontation with Russia, entirely on its own initiative.
We would like to remind once again that over the recent years, the British side has continuously been undermining every opportunity to establish a constructive dialogue with Russia under the pretext of alleged Russian threats to “national security interests”. The most striking examples of such behaviour is the stubborn rejection of proposals to establish cooperation on cybersecurity, and the categorical refusal to conduct a joint transparent investigation into the Salisbury incident.
The statements by Alex Younger show yet again that the current Conservative government prefers to make unsubstantiated declarations, which sow fear and distrust in the British society, rather than behave in a civilized and responsible manner.
